The ontogeny of the fruiting bodies of Baeomyces roseus is investigated and compared to that of Baeomyces rufus. Baeomyces roseus has ascogons with trichogynes similar to those of Baeomyces rufus. In Baeomyces roseus an apothecium is formed on the surface of the thallus horizontalis. Later it is lifted upwards by the podetium. In Baeomyces rufus the podetium arrises prior to the forming of the apothecium. Therefore the genus should be divided into two subgenera - subg. Baeomyces (with B. roseus) and subg. Sphyridium (with B. rufus). Old fruiting bodies of Baeomyces roseus show regeneration of the apothecium. If this occurs in the stalk of the old apothecium, a completely new primordium is formed, including a new generative tissue. If the regeneration occurs in the apothecium no generative tissue appears, but the hyphae of the subhymenial tissue form the new hymenium. In both types of regeneration new ascogons are formed
