Takahashi Y., Shibata S., Yokoyama J., Hashimoto H., Yokobori S. & Yamagishi A. (2013): Selection of lichens resistant to the cosmic environment—thermal cycle treatment, UV irradiation and heavy ion beam irradiation, Biological Sciences in Space, 27: 9–18

A strong species of lichens was sorted out to expose the extreme conditions which will be encountered by interplanetary space, followed our previous work of fungal and moss spores. Caloplaca flavovirescens was the most resistant lichen among 10 kinds (9 species) of the lichens examined against temperature fluctuations in vacuum, UV irradiation and cosmic ion irradiation (examined 3 species). The survival rate decreased about 24% by the thermal cycle treatment under vacuum ( EN Read more...

Redhead S.A. & Kuyper T.W. (1987): Lichenized agarics: taxonomic and nomenclatural riddles, Arctic and Alpine Mycology, 2: 319-348

The fully lichenized omphaloid agarics common in arctic and alpine regions of the world represent natural genera distinct from their non-lichenized allies in Omphalina. Based on thallus morphology these lichens may be distinguished from other basidiomycetous lichens. Semiomphalina leptoglossoides (Corner) Redhead develops a reduced basidiome lacking lamellae. Its globular thalli are typical of primitive Botrydina species. Botrydina viridis (Ach.) Redhead & Kuyper develops a complex foliose … EN Read more...
