Juichang R., Freedman B., Coles C., Zwicker B., Holzbecker J. & Chatt A. (1995): Vanadium Contamination of Lichens and Tree Foliage in the Vicinity of Three Oil-Fired Power Plants in Eastern Canada, Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association, 45(6) 461-464

Vanadium concentrations were determined by neutron activation analysis in samples of epiphytic lichens and tree foliage collected at sites along 10 transects in the vicinity of three oil-fired power plants in eastern Canada. The vanadium concentrations in plants decreased exponentially with increasing distance from the power plants. Substantially larger concentrations of vanadium occurred in lichen tissues than in tree foliage. Lichens clearly are more suitable for biomonitoring environmental … EN Read more...

Kösta H. & Tilk M. (2008): Variability of bryophytes and lichens on a forested coastal dune Tõotusemägi in Southwestern Estonia, Forestry Studies | Metsanduslikud Uurimused, 49: 71-80

Bryophytes and lichens are important in all dry land ecosystems due to their ability to colonize different substrates which are not suitable for vascular plants. They have an important role in vertebrates and invertebrate’s food chain and function as a habitat for invertebrates. Nitrogen and carbon cycles in the forest depend greatly on the local bryophyte and lichen flora. The aim of present study was to investigate the frequency and variety of different species of bryophytes and lichens … EN Read more...

Czeczuga B., Stenroos S., Christensen S.N. & Ahti T. (1991): Variability of carotenoid composition in some species of the lichen genera Cladonia and Cladina, Annales Botanici Fennici, 28: 123–130

The whole-lichen carotenoid composition was analyzed in Cladonia fimbriata (L.) Fr., C. merochlorophaea Asah. (incl. var. novochlorophaea Sipman), C. pyxidata (L.) Hoffm., Cladina rangiferina (L.) Nyl. and C. stygia (Fr.) Ahti. Twenty carotenoids were identified, each specimen containing 6-10. The most frequent principal carotenoids were lutein epoxide and violaxanthin, in Cladonia also antheroxanthin and in Cladina mutatoxanthin. The frequeni carotenoids, at least, can be assumed to be located in … EN Read more...

Prach K., Klimešová J., Košnar J., Redčenko O. [Redchenko O.] & Hais M. (2012): Variability of contemporary vegetation around Petuniabukta, central Spitsbergen, Polish Polar Research, 33(4): 383–394

Vegetation was described in various spatial scales in the area of 37.8 km2 including distinguishing vegetation units, vegetation mapping, recording phytosociological relevés (53), and completing species lists of vascular plants (86), mosses (124) and lichens (40). Phytosociological relevés were elaborated using ordination methods DCA and CCA. The relevés formed clusters corresponding well to a priori assigned vegetation units. Slope and stoniness significantly influenced the vegetation pattern. … EN Read more...
