The study of the lichenoflora of three urban territories (Donetsk, Shakhtarsk, Torez) with high anthropopression chosen by the index of average annual concentration of air pollutants yielded 28 species of lichens related to 16 genera, 9 families. The observed data on the spread of lichens adequately reflect the level of air pollution which is corroborated by instrumental investigation. Thus, it is advantageous to use lichens as biomarkers of pollution for anthropogenically transformed environments. EndNote Read more...

One of the reasons for decline in abundance of rare and threatened species, including lichens, is uncontrolled pressure on the natural environment. Cetraria steppae (Savicz) Kärnef. listed in the «Red Data Book of Ukraine» (2009) is endangered and could become extinct without future management and control of the steppe plots where the species occurs. Distribution of the species and reasons of its abundance decline in the South-East of Ukraine are considered; recommendations for conservation … EndNote Read more...

Distribution analysis of sensitive to air pollution epiphyte lichen-forming fungi in Rivne town is provided. In addition to previous lichen indication mapping data obtained in late 1980s and early 1990s, we report localities of sensitive to air pollution fruticose and foliose lichens in the northern part as well as some records from central, southern and eastern parts of the town. A number of lichen species that are sensitive to atmospheric pollution has tripled. Thus improvement of the state of … EndNote Read more...

Occurrence of epiphytic lichen species sensitive to air pollution was studied in model small towns Irpin, Bucha and Boyarka of Kiev Region. For each town, distribution maps of the species with medium and high sensitivity to air pollution are provided. Description of the occurrence patterns of these lichens is presented. Occurrence of sensitive species is found to be higher in Irpin and Bucha. Besides, these towns have parklands which are remnants of the forests of natural origin and serve as refugia. … EndNote Read more...
