Woods R.G. (2010): A Lichen Red Data List for Wales / Rhestr o Gen Data Coch ar gyfer Cymru, Plantlife, Salisbury, 69 p

This report presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of the current status of lichens in Wales using the updated IUCN criteria. It has brought to light a suite of species more threatened in Wales than in the rest of Britain, as well as some species threatened in Britain but which are doing better in Wales. Wales has a responsibility to protect and conserve all these threatened species, and it is hoped the findings of this study will be used to inform priorities for conservation action … URL EN Read more...

Woodward A. & Soll J.A. (2021): Establishment and survival of Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa) in meadows of Olympic National Park, Washington, Northwest Science, 94(3-4): 256-270

Establishment of trees in subalpine meadows is a potential indicator of ecological effects of climate change. Tree establishment is a multi-year process including cone and seed production, germination, establishment, and growth, with each demographic step possibly sensitive to different climate limitations. While most studies have focused on one or a few steps, this study follows a cohort of individually marked saplings for 27 years beginning as seeds in two meadows on Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National … URL EN Read more...

Woodwell G.M. & Gannutz T.P. (1967): Effects of Chronic Gamma Irradiation on Lichen Communities of a Forest, American Journal of Botany, 54(10): 1210-1215

Chronic gamma irradiation of an oak-pine forest on Long Island reduced populations of corticolous and terrestrial lichens in approximate proportion to the rate of irradiation. The decline in species diversity was approximately linearly related to logarithmic increases in daily radiation exposure. While a daily exposure of 2700 R/day was estimated to have reduced diversity to 50% in the first year, a linear extrapolation of diversity, coefficient of community and similarity curves to zero suggested … EN PDF Read more...

Galactomannans were isolated from Cladonia signata, C. furcata, C. imperialis, and C. clathrata via successive alkaline extraction and precipitation with Fehling solution and Cetavlon. They were investigated using ⊃13C-NMR spectroscopy, methylation analysis, and Smith degradation, and their specific rotations and monosaccharide compositions determined. As with galactomannans of other Cladonia species, they contained (l →6)-linked main chains of α-mannopyranose, which were non-substituted (structure … EN Read more...
