A specimen of Baeomyces having botryoform apothecia was collected at 1300 m elev. on Mt. Tanzawa of Mts. Tanzawa, central Japan in 2006. It resembles B. placophyllus in morphology of the thallus, but the apothecia are similar to those of 8. botryophorus Zahlbr. previously known from the type locality in Taiwan and a few localities in central to western Japan. Chemical analysis by TLC revealed the presence of stlcttc acid, norstictic acid (trace) and constictic acid (trace) in the specimen in question and also in S. placophyllus. The apothecial surface becomes rough when over 5 mm diam., but the podetia do not longate significantly. The vertical section shows that the apothecia are immature by lacking hyrnenium, and there are ascogones at ca. 50 urn deep from the surface within each projection of apothecial disc. This way of development of apothecia differs from B. placophytlus, thus the specimen can be distinguished from the latter species taxonomically. At the present time, we prefer to treat it as B. botryophorus, although the of this lichen species remains still unclear
