Usnea intermedia was described from Italy by A. Massalongo in 1856 as U. barbata var. intermedia. The lectotype designated here is stored in the herbarium LE, isolectotypes in BM, BOLO, DUB, FH, NY, TO, UPS. Usnea intermedia is most similar to U. florida distinguishing mainly by its chemistry and spore size.
