Twenty-five North American lichens are issued in Fascicle IX of the “Anderson and Shushan: Lichens of Western North America” series, numbers 201–225. This fascicle comprises material representing vagrant forms from the genus Xanthoparmelia (Parmeliaceae), including the nominal taxa X. chlorochroa, X. idahoensis, X. neochlorochroa, X. norchlorochroa (including a collection from the type locality), and X. wyomingica (including a collection from the type locality). All vagrant Xanthoparmelia taxa occurring in North America have been found to be polyphyletic in phylogenetic reconstructions, and the repeated evolution of similar growth forms and secondary metabolite production suggests limited utility of traditional diagnostic characters for inferring natural groupings. Our aim is that these collections will provide a critical foundation for ongoing research into this fascinating group of vagrant lichens.
Keywords: Biodiversity, collections-based research, herbarium, Intermountain West, tumbleweed lichens, vagrant, Xanthoparmelia.
