The study focuses on Cladonia furcata and its subspecies subrangiformis within lichen communities of North Hessen, specifically in the class Toninio-Psoretea decipientis. Morphological, chemical, and molecular (ITS rDNA) analyses were conducted. The subspecies differ in chemical composition—subrangiformis contains atranorin and fumarprotocetraric acid, while furcata generally does not. Sequencing results show no correlation between ITS variants and subspecies, suggesting a complex relationship. The role of photobionts from the genus Asterochloris and ecological implications of the species division were also discussed words.
