This paper examines the lichenological diversity within the genera Cladonia and Physcia, with an emphasis on species found in Portugal. It highlights the discovery of Cladonia mitis Sandst. and Cladonia tenuis (Flk.) Harm., as well as the detailed study of Physcia ascendens Bitter, Physcia leptalea (Ach. p. p.) DC., and Physcia tenella Bitter. The research underscores the importance of critical revisions in the classification of Portuguese lichens, addressing taxonomic errors and providing morphological descriptions and ecological observations. Newly documented distribution areas, habitat preferences, and comparisons with previously misidentified specimens are also included to refine the understanding of these lichens in Portugal's diverse ecosystems.
