A biographical review of the Victorian botanist and explorer Richard Spruce (1817-1893) is provided. Details are given of his work on the English, Pyrenean and South American floras, with particular attention paid to his contribution to cryptogamic botany. His lichenological expertise, which has hitherto received less attention, is evaluated mainly in terms of the extensive collections (including unpublished exsiccatae) he assembled
