Four new saxicolous Roccella species (Roccellaceae, Arthoniales) are described from the Pacific Galápagos Islands: R, geniculata FOLLM. & B. WERNER, R. glebaria B. WERNER & FOLLM., R. kappenicina FOLLM. & B. WERNER, R. stipitata B. WERNER & FOLLM. This raises the number of confirmed Galapagoan Roccella taxa to nine, eight thereof being lavicolous neoendemics of more or less maritime habitats. Provided with various chemical and morphological characters unknown from the genus and (or) family so far, the last-named represent a closely related, sharply defined species aggregate. According to comparative analyses, R. lirellina (DARB.) FOLLM. from the Peruvian littoral proved to be the nearest affined continental taxon and possible progenitor of the saxicolous island population. Obviously, colonization and evolution followed similar principles as in case of certain amply developed groups of cacti and composites, snails, tortoises, iguanas, and birds on the "Enchanted Islands”. A key leads to the Roccella species of Galápagos and the South American West Coast. In an appended note R. arboricola FOLLM. is introduced as new synonym of R. portentosa (MONT.) DARB. and the legitimacy of R. lirellina (DARB.) FOLLM. vs. Reinkella lirellina DARB. is commented upon.
